Our muffins really are the best!
April 17, 2009, 12:00 am.
All muffins are not created equally.
We always knew that our new Triple Chocolate muffins were pretty special but now it's been proved in an independent taste test!
Research conducted by independent research company McCallum Layton compared the qualities of the popular chocolate muffin from five leading retailers to find out which indulgent treat is the perfect match to enjoy on its own or alongside a gourmet coffee. Consumers from across the country participated in the blind taste tests where they were asked to rank chocolate muffins from five retailers – Caffe Nero, Costa, Greggs, Pret a Manger and Starbucks – taking into consideration a variety of factors including appearance, size, texture and flavour. And whilst coffee houses are largely credited with the rise in popularity of the muffin, it was the product from Greggs that came out top.
From a sample of 140 participants, 43 per cent ranked the muffin from Greggs as their overall favourite, with our product scoring highest in five out of the seven assessment categories including appearance, chocolate flavour and texture.
The Greggs chocolate muffin was significantly preferred to the others at the 85% confidence level: 62% preferred Greggs to 38% for Caffe Nero, 65% preferred Greggs to 35% for Costa Coffee, 74% preferred Greggs to 25% for Pret a Manger, 86% preferred Greggs to 14% for Starbucks. More over, the Greggs product was rated significantly better than all four competitor products for overall opinion, chocolate flavour and appearance on being cut in half. But it’s not all bad news for the coffee house chains with the muffins from Costa and Caffe Nero performing strongly in each of the seven categories with the latter scoring highest in terms of size and shape. Premium sandwich retailer Pret a Manger didn’t fare so well with its chocolate muffin ranked by 25% of the participants as their least favourite overall, only scoring higher than that from Starbucks which more than half the respondents claimed to be the worst muffin in the bunch.
Scott Jefferson, marketing director at Greggs – who launched its range of muffins earlier this year - said: “We are delighted at how our muffins have performed; it represents what we do best which is to ensure our customers can enjoy great tasting products which do not compromise on the standard and quality of ingredients but offer excellent value for money which is particularly important in the current market place.” Matt Counsell from McCallum Layton added: “It was interesting to see how consumers reacted to the different muffins available to them – the feedback demonstrates that they are very much a confectionery item enjoyed by lots of people in their own right.” |
